The University of Wyoming’s Center of Innovation for Flow through Porous Media (COIFPM) announced on April 16 that Amira and Avizo, two advanced imaging software applications from Thermo Fisher Scientific, are now accessible at no cost to users across the university and community colleges statewide.

This move is part of an ongoing research partnership between COIFPM and Thermo Fisher Scientific. The availability of these tools aims to support research, teaching, and data exploration in various scientific disciplines throughout Wyoming’s higher education institutions.

Amira and Avizo are designed for 3D visualization and analysis, enabling users to reconstruct high-resolution images from CT or SEM scans, analyze pore-scale structures, simulate material behavior, segment images, track features over time, characterize materials, analyze particles, visualize dynamic processes with time-series data, and prepare simulations through meshing workflows. While both platforms share similar capabilities, Amira is optimized for life sciences and biomedical uses; Avizo is geared toward material science, geosciences, and industrial imaging.

Licenses for the software will remain active as long as the COIFPM-Thermo Fisher Scientific partnership continues. The current agreement extends through October 31, 2034. To access the software or find setup instructions, users can consult the UWIT Knowledge Base.

A three-day training program on Avizo will take place April 28-30 with daily sessions scheduled in both morning and afternoon blocks. Each session builds upon previous content rather than repeating it. All sessions will be recorded for those unable to attend live. A separate training program on Amira is planned for the fall semester.

Registration information for Avizo training as well as additional details about both software platforms are available online.
