U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), serving as Senate Majority Whip, addressed the Senate to outline what he described as a record year of accomplishments for Senate Republicans. In his remarks, Barrasso emphasized several legislative achievements and policy changes that he said have contributed to increased economic security and safety for Americans.
Barrasso highlighted the passage of the Working Families Tax Cuts bill, which he called “the central point of our comprehensive economic plan.” According to Barrasso, this legislation is expected to result in tax savings for various groups: “Waiters, barbers, and bartenders will keep $1,300 more in their pockets next year because of no tax on tips. Nurses, firefighters, police officers, and coal miners will see $1,400 more in their paychecks next year because of no tax on overtime. Seniors will see more money in their bank accounts. There is a new $6,000 deduction on Social Security income.”
He also credited individual senators with specific contributions to the legislation: “Thanks to Senator Katie Britt of Alabama, Republicans modernized tax credits for childcare… Thanks to Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, new parents now get a $1,000 ‘Trump Account’ for every newborn child… All parents get a bigger child tax credit – $2,200 for each child each year.”
Barrasso reported that inflation has dropped below 3 percent on average and noted lower gas prices across 38 states. He attributed these trends to policies supporting domestic energy production: “This is because Republicans unleashed American energy… The Working Families Tax Cuts unleashed American energy. It reopens federal lands and waters for energy production.”
On regulatory matters, Barrasso stated that Republicans repealed 23 Biden-era regulations using the Congressional Review Act and claimed this rollback would save Americans $180 billion: “By reining in Biden’s heavy-handed bureaucrats, we are saving Americans $180 billion. That pencils out to over $2,000 in savings for each and every family.”
The senator pointed out efforts led by colleagues such as Senator Cynthia Lummis regarding Wyoming’s Buffalo Resource Management Plan repeal—an action said to benefit local energy producers.
Further legislative actions mentioned include creating a $50 billion Rural Hospital Fund and passing the Orphan Cures Act aimed at improving treatment options for patients with rare diseases.
Barrasso addressed public safety initiatives as well: “We began this year by passing a bill from Senator Britt and Senator Ted Budd of North Carolina called the Laken Riley Act… It mandates the detention of illegal immigrant criminals.” He also referenced investments in border security through the Working Families Tax Cuts bill.
In terms of government appointments, Barrasso stated: “As we finish the year, Senate Republicans have confirmed a record number of President Trump’s nominees… By week’s end, President Trump will have 417 nominees confirmed by the Senate in 2025.”
Contrasting Republican actions with those of Democrats during this period, Barrasso said: “What have Democrats done? They’ve obstructed. Democrats spent the year on the side of higher taxes…”
He concluded his remarks stating: “Republicans are putting more money in people’s pockets, delivering safer communities, and providing more opportunities. Republicans will continue to deliver the safety and prosperity Americans deserve.”
