Four former University of Wyoming football players signed free agent contracts with National Football League teams following the conclusion of the draft, according to an April 25 announcement. Offensive lineman Caden Barnett joined the Chicago Bears, tight end John Michael Gyllenborg signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, running back Sam Scott agreed to terms with the New York Jets, and tight end Evan Svoboda was picked up by the Los Angeles Chargers.
These signings are significant for both the athletes and the Wyoming Cowboys program, as they highlight continued opportunities for players to transition from college football to professional careers in the NFL.
Barnett started all 12 games at guard this season after previously playing tackle for three years. He was recognized as Pro Football Focus’ highest graded guard in the Mountain West Conference this year and earned Second Team All-Mountain West honors. Over his career, Barnett played in 48 games with 34 starts and led his team in knockdowns this season. He also participated in postseason events including the Hula Bowl and East-West Shrine Game.
Gyllenborg completed his collegiate career with 80 receptions totaling 1,023 yards and seven touchdowns. This past season he had a notable performance against Hawai’i with a career-high six catches. He was twice named to the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch list and took part in both the Senior Bowl—where he contributed a catch—and February’s NFL Combine.
Scott finished last season rushing for over 400 yards, bringing his career total to more than 1,000 yards on the ground along with receiving contributions. His highlights included a personal best of 132 rushing yards against Akron.
Svoboda appeared in all games at tight end during his final year, recording double-digit receptions and one touchdown while averaging over eight yards per catch. His standout game came against San Jose State where he made four catches.
The progression of these players into professional football underscores their individual achievements as well as ongoing development within Wyoming’s football program.
