Seniors Ryker Holtzen and Cam Burkett won Mountain West titles in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and shot put on May 15, closing a high-scoring night for Wyoming on day two of the Mountain West Championships in Clovis, California.

The Cowboys finished the second day in fifth place with 28 points, while the Cowgirls were ninth with a total of 10 points. The results reflect strong performances from both teams as they advance through the championship.

For the Cowboys, sophomore Christian Edwards placed eighth in the long jump finals with a best mark of 7.17 meters. Junior AJ McGloflin earned fourth place in high jump by clearing 2.07 meters. Senior Mac Zastrow ran a time of 3:51.36 in the 1,500 meters for thirteenth place and will compete again in the upcoming events. In sprinting events, freshman Ryan Elsen posted a personal best of 10.45 seconds to win his heat and qualify for Saturday’s final, moving to No. 5 all-time at Wyoming.

Holtzen led nearly every lap of his steeplechase race and finished first with a time of 8:37.62—over two seconds ahead—adding another title to his record after never finishing lower than second during his four-year career at these championships. In shot put, Burkett became champion with a throw of 19.19 meters after placing second last year and third as a freshman.

On the women’s side, freshman Desirae Iacovetto set personal bests across multiple heptathlon events to finish tenth overall with an improved score that ranks her seventh all-time at Wyoming. Freshman Jade West made it into shot put finals and placed sixth; Muriel Jones led Cowgirls’ efforts in steeplechase by finishing sixth overall with a personal best time that is now fourth fastest in program history.

The final day will feature more field and track events starting at 4 p.m., concluding later that evening.
