The Rawlins Skate Park opens today at Key Club park at 800 Colorado Street! This project is the culmination of eleven months of work to bring a skate park to our community. City Council designated funds for the new Skate Park, then City Council and Staff held two Town Halls to gather community feedback, visited middle school students during their lunch break on two occasions, and had an online survey. Between all meetings, hundreds of residents contributed their ideas to bring this park to reality.
On March 15, 2022, City Council approved the planned design and location of the Skate Park. Following this, Parks and Recreation staff hired concrete contractors to prep the former tennis courts and ordered the actual stake park components. By using the former tennis courts, the skate park was able to be installed this year. If a new concrete pad had to be poured, all of the funding would have been invested into just the concrete pad. The components are high-quality and attach to any solid concrete base. So far, the skate park includes a half-pipe, quarter-pipes, ramp, stairs, and rail. The park is set up for both park- and street-style skateboarding. The park is also designed for use by bike, scooters, roller blades, and other non-motorized vehicles. City Council and Staff held a groundbreaking ceremony on September 8th, and the components were installed last weekend.
In addition to the funding provided by City Council, a number of community businesses and organizations donated to the skate park, including HF Sinclair, Dirty Boyz Sanitation, Roberston Snow Removal, Ichiban Steakhouse, Love is Love Pride Festival, Williams, Hones Veterinary Clinic and Mass Grading LLC. HF Sinclair’s donation of $25,000 and other donations are already set aside to install the next phase of the skate park, which includes a few new elements, next summer.
The Skate Park is part of the redevelopment of Key Club park, one of the most centrally located parks in our community. Key Club park is now the home to the community dog and skate parks, a playground, two portable toilets when the weather allows, and soon a human and dog drinking fountain. Parks and Recreation staff is applying for grants and preparing estimates for other potential improvements, including expanded parking, vault toilets, and more shade structures. Parking in the lot at Key Club Park is limited, so parking along Colorado Street is also encouraged.
