Cheney was one of ten Republicans who voted to impeach, even though the House of Representatives didn’t offer Trump a “formal hearing or due process," the censure document stated.
“We need to honor President Trump. All President Trump did was call for a peaceful assembly and protest for a fair and audited election,” said Darin Smith, the Epoch Times reported. Smith is a Cheyenne attorney who lost to Cheney in the Republican U.S. House primary back in 2016. “The Republican Party needs to put her on notice.”
Prior to the Jan. 6 insurrection, Trump gave a speech encouraging people to voice their opinions and not vote for candidates like Cheney in the next election.
“And we got to remember, in a year from now, you’re going to start working on Congress and we got to get rid of the weak Congresspeople, the ones that aren’t any good, the Liz Cheneys of the world. We got to get rid of them,” Trump said, the Epoch Times reported.
Cheney had defended her decision to vote for impeachment, blaming Trump for the attack on the Capitol. On being censured, she said she was honored to represent Wyoming and will always fight for the good of the state.
The censure is one of many repercussions she might face. Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski has set up a committee and is working to defeat Cheney in the Republican primary in 2022. At least two Republicans are already eying her seat
