Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) grilled Interior Secretary nominee Rep. Deb Haaland (D-NM) about federal pipeline permits, nuclear power, natural gas, and her Twitter post declaring "Republicans don't believe in science."
During Haaland's confirmation hearing, Sen. Barrasso reminded the congresswoman that there are three senators in the committee who are also medical doctors.
"We have Dr. Cassidy as a gastroenterologist, Dr. Marshall is an obstetrician, I’m an orthopedic surgeon and just a couple of months ago, you tweeted “Republicans don’t believe in science.” It’s a pretty broad statement that you made there. Now, do you think that as medical doctors and as Republicans also, we don’t believe in science? I mean how do you stand by this statement" Barrasso asked.
The Democrat Representative answered briefly, "Senator, yes, if you're a doctor, I would assume that you believe in science."
Haaland became one of the first two enrolled tribal members to be elected to Congress and she could become the first Indigenous Interior Secretary in U.S. history if she is able to pass through the rigorous process of the Senate Confirmations Committee, Forbes reported.
The Interior Department is in charge of the country's energy development as well as tribal matters.
