Rental Housing Registration Now Open for Property Owners

City of Laramie recently issued the following announcement.

In January, the Laramie City Council voted to adopt the Laramie Rental Housing Code which requires the registration of rental housing, sets minimum habitability standards, and establishes a process to file complaints regarding non-compliant rental housing. Over the course of 2022 and 2023, the new municipal code requirements will be implemented in phases.

As of April 1st, property owners of rental housing have been able to register their property or properties by visiting https://www.cityoflaramie.org/1207/Rental-Housing-Code. Upon submission of a complete application, processing fee and pre-inspection checklist indicating the housing meets the minimum habitability standards, property owners will be issued a dwelling license and be registered with the City. Property Owners are required to provide a copy of the dwelling license to each tenant. All rental housing must be registered and licensed within the City.

Owners of rental housing not currently meeting the minimum habitability standards will have until December 31, 2022 to bring the property into compliance. Minimum habitability standards include structural integrity; functional plumbing, heating, electrical, appliances, and smoke/carbon monoxide detection; freedom from pests and mold; and suitable egress/ingress for emergency escape. On January 1, 2023, tenants who have followed the outlined process will have the ability to file complaints with the City regarding rental housing that does not meet the minimum habitability standards. 

Further public information and education on the minimum habitability standards and the complaint-based inspection program will continue throughout 2022.
