Mayor Brown Announces Closings and Changes in Advance of Forecasted Christmas Weekend Storm | buffalo

Mayor Byron W. Brown announced closings and changes today ahead of the forecasted Christmas Weekend Storm. Ice, wind, lake-effect snow, lakeshore flooding, subfreezing temperatures and power outages are possible across the City of Buffalo and the Western New York region throughout the duration of the storm. This potentially dangerous storm is expected to bring hazardous conditions to the area which will impact the entire City.

“A winter storm watch has been issued for all of Western New York except for Allegany County from 7:00 am on Friday until 7:00 am on Monday,” stated Mayor Brown. “I encourage everyone to plan accordingly and finish up their last-minute holiday shopping and errands by Thursday, before the harsh weather arrives.”

Below are the closures and changes Mayor Brown announced today in advance of the pending storm.

  • Garbage and recycling pickup in Buffalo will be canceled on Friday, December 23rd. City residents are being asked NOT to put out their totes on Thursday evening, if their scheduled garbage and recycling collection day is on Friday. Their pickup will be on Monday, December 26th. All other scheduled pickups for the week of Dec 26 will be picked up one day later than usual, through Saturday.
  • Buffalo’s four waterfront parks will close to pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicular traffic on Thursday, December 22nd at 3:00 pm. Those parks include Ralph Wilson Park, Bird Island Pier, Broderick Park and Erie Basin Marina.
  • The City of Buffalo’s two indoor pools, Cazenovia and Lovejoy, will be closed on Friday, December 23rd due to the storm.
Mayor Brown reminded City residents to sign up for BUFFALERT, if they haven’t already, to stay informed of snow emergencies and other public service announcements. To sign for BUFFALERT, text your zip code to 38276.
