Ten University of Wyoming students were selected on June 2 for the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, receiving an average award of $3,300 to support participation in a UW Education Abroad program.
The recipients are among nearly 2,000 students chosen nationwide from over 12,000 applicants. The scholarship is available to Pell Grant recipients and aims to increase access to international education opportunities.
During the application process, University of Wyoming students work with the Education Abroad Office to select programs that fit their academic and personal goals while preparing competitive applications and essays. Shelley Jewell and Dianne Thompson serve as UW’s Gilman advisers and assist students throughout the process.
“We are thrilled to see 10 UW students recognized as Gilman Scholars during this exceptionally competitive application cycle, which included more than 12,000 applicants nationwide,” Jewell said. “These scholarships highlight our students’ commitment to academic excellence and global engagement, and we are excited to see how their international experiences will shape their future endeavors.”
The ten recipients represent a range of majors and destinations: Arielle Coleman will study at Freie Universität Berlin; EJ Harvey will participate in a seminar on Nazi Germany and the Holocaust in Germany and Poland; David Kienzle was selected for a seminar on food culture in France but plans to defer; Parker Brennan will attend a program on Japanese society; Naomi Carlson will study sustainability in Cusco, Peru; Yelitza Torres received funding for a Japan seminar but plans to defer; Tara Warrick will focus on education coursework in Italy; Roger Mare will spend spring 2027 at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul; Paige Vance joins the summer program in Japan; Allison Brummell participates in Semester at Sea across more than 20 countries.
Jewell said these awards reflect both strong student preparation and institutional support.
