The University of Wyoming earned multiple runner-up finishes in its first appearance at the International Business Ethics and Sustainability Case Competition, according to an April 29 announcement.
The event, hosted by Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, brought together more than 60 teams from 40 universities across eight countries. The competition is designed to challenge students to apply ethical reasoning and sustainability strategies to real-world business problems.
UW teams received runner-up honors in both the graduate divisions for the 25-minute and 10-minute presentations, as well as recognition in the undergraduate division for a 90-second presentation. Chris Haller, director of the Center for Principle-Based Leadership and Ethics and lead team adviser, said, “This is an extraordinary achievement, especially given that this was UW’s first time competing in IBESCC. Our students rose to the challenge on a global stage, showcasing not only their analytical abilities, but also their commitment to ethical leadership and sustainable business practices.”
Participants presented solutions that integrated legal, financial and ethical considerations while focusing on their recommendations’ ethical acceptability and impact. UW’s Illuminating Consulting graduate team included Avery O’Brien (MBA student), Daljit Kaur (junior accounting/economics major), Owen Fink (senior economics/finance/management major), and Tristan Patterson (senior finance/pre-law major). The Green Guardians undergraduate team featured Ethan Graham (senior journalism major), Hannah Ludlage (junior management/marketing major), Rater Tomlinson (sophomore economics/marketing major), and Thad Blackburn (senior professional sales major). TrueNorth Consulting represented another undergraduate group with Charli Frankenfeld, Dalia Weber, Joseph Rezac, and Oakley Simons.
Chase Thiel, associate dean of the College of Business and assistant team adviser for the competition said: “This accomplishment speaks to the caliber of our students and the experiential learning opportunities we are committed to providing. We look forward to building on this momentum in future competitions.”
The International Business Ethics and Sustainability Case Competition is held annually by Loyola Marymount University’s Institute for Business Ethics and Sustainability. It brings together top student teams worldwide to address complex ethical challenges facing organizations today.
