Fifteen students from the University of Wyoming participated in the annual Wyoming Pi Days event, according to a May 15 announcement from the university’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
The event offered students an opportunity to engage with mathematics outside of their regular coursework. Participants attended three evening sessions where they ate pizza, solved math problems, and learned new problem-solving strategies.
The highlight of the program was the Pi Days competition held on April 11. During this session, students took an exam designed to test their mathematical skills. All participants received T-shirts and puzzles for their involvement.
Two winners were recognized for their performance on the exam: Husanpreet Singh, an astronomy and astrophysics major from Tarn Taran, India who is also minoring in honors; and Dani Jones from Gillette, who earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental systems science with minors in geology and mathematics. Jones plans to pursue a graduate certificate for secondary mathematics education this fall.
Corbyn Guse, a student at Laramie High School who will attend UW full time as a secondary mathematics education major this fall, received honorable mention for his submission.
Wyoming Pi Days was organized by Kostas Kydoniatis, Tyrrell McAllister and Christina Knox with assistance from Eric Moorhouse, Long Lee and Roman Winter.
