The Wyoming Cowgirls women’s golf team extended their lead during the second round of the National Golf Invitational on May 16, shooting a score of 289 (+1) and holding a 13-stroke advantage ahead of Sunday’s final round at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes in Maricopa, Arizona.

This strong performance puts Wyoming at even-par with a total of 576 strokes through two rounds. The team is aiming for its first postseason title in its first ever postseason event.

“I honestly think today’s round was almost even better than yesterdays because of the course set up being difficult with the hole locations and the course overall played harder as the wind picked up,” Wyoming head coach Josey Stender said. “I was really proud of the team staying in it and you know a lot of them had a couple holes that were a little iffy and they rebounded really well from them.”

Senior Meghan Vogt led Wyoming on Saturday with a round of 68 (-4), tying for the third-best round in Cowgirl history. Vogt sits in second place individually, two strokes behind the leader at three-under par after two rounds. Kiley Reisner finished her day with a score of 73 (+1) and is currently third overall at two-under par across both rounds.

“Kiley, Meghan and Elle have been our top three consistent performers all season long and I think it is only fitting in this event that they’re continuing that,” Stender said. “Meghan played phenomenal today, she probably had one errant shot that I can think of otherwise it was just a near perfect round and I was so happy for her.”

Elle Higgins also shot a 73 (+1) on Saturday to tie for fourth place at even par over two rounds. Kira Reisner stands tied for sixteenth place after carding five-over par across both days, while Emerson Purcell is tied for nineteenth place at six-over par following her four-over effort on Saturday.

Denver trails Wyoming by thirteen strokes with an overall score of 589 (+13), while Rutgers holds third place at 598 (+22). Bowling Green’s Addison Kartusch leads all individuals at five-under following her own round of 68 (-4).

The final round will take place Sunday morning as Wyoming looks to secure its first postseason championship.
