As the holiday shopping season approaches, Small Business Saturday is gaining momentum. This year, it falls on November 26. According to a survey by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), spending at independent retailers and restaurants on this day reached an estimated $23.3 billion last year, marking an 18% increase from the previous year.
Tony Gagliardi, Wyoming state director for NFIB, emphasized the unique offerings of local businesses: “Unique items, product expertise, and customer service are three things only found in your local small businesses.” He encouraged community members to support these businesses during this crucial time.
Small Business Saturday was initiated in 2010 as a response to the struggles faced by Main Street businesses post-Great Recession. It has since evolved into one of the significant shopping days of the year, providing an opportunity for communities to back their local enterprises.
To capitalize on Small Business Saturday, shops and restaurants can employ several strategies:
- Stay active on social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter by posting frequently about any special deals using hashtags such as #ShopSmall and #SmallBizSat.
- Highlight merchandise suitable for gifts or offer specials and gift cards in restaurants.
- Implement doorbuster deals similar to those used by chain stores.
- Collaborate with nearby businesses for joint advertising efforts or in-store promotions.
- Inform regular customers about exclusive offers available on Small Business Saturday through signs and flyers.
